I Am the Resurrection | I Am Part 4
Message Summary: At some point in life, everyone will think, “If only God _________”– (ex. If only God had healed my friend/family member,” “If only God had given me what I needed” etc). These situations make us feel distant from God or even doubt our faith. Lazarus’ story shows that sometimes God waits to do what even He wants to do as a loving Father– provide, protect, and even heal.
Disappointment over time separates us from the only source of true help, healing, and hope. This is part of the enemy’s plan to isolate and destroy us.
When you find yourself living in hell, going to heaven just isn’t enough. Sometimes in the middle of our pain, we don’t need “churchy”, such as being sent bible verses, worship songs, etc. Sometimes what we need to feel comfort is just to not be alone, to sit in silence with friends and loved ones, and let them hurt, mourn, and grieve with us together.
The first step to resurrection is death. Jesus is a resurrection specialist, and He knows what He is doing. His timing is not like ours because His timing is perfect. He resurrected Lazarus from death to life and resurrected hope, joy, and peace that had died in the hearts of Mary and Martha, just as he continues to do in all of us every day, especially in times of pain.
- What is a time in your life when God answered a big prayer? What is a time where He did not answer the prayer, and it caused you to feel confused or disappointed?
- What is a time when God has revealed why He did not answer those prayers when and how you wanted by protecting you and providing something better?
- Is it okay to feel angry or disappointed at God? In seasons of death, how can we help ourselves and each other focus on our resurrection hope in Jesus?
John 11:6, 17-26 – So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
…On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
…“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
