Speaker:
Micah Stephens
So many of us are praying for miracles in our lives – relationships, finances, health, family – for situations to change. Do we truly need a miracle, or do we need a habit? Do we understand the power of habit? We know what we want, but becoming that person is the struggle. So much of what we need depends on habits. Micah referenced the book Atomic Habits by James Clear throughout his message. James Clear tells readers not to focus on goals, focus on systems. Build a habit every day. The miracle is in you to create and sustain a habit.
In the book of Daniel, Daniel is ripped out of his Hebrew culture and put in the center of Babylonian culture. The king plans to indoctrinate the strongest boys to learn the culture of the Babylonians so they can be resources to the kingdom. Daniel’s life changes, but his habits do not – even when the king set a decree that no one could pray to anyone but him, Daniel did what he had always done and pray just as before. Daniel’s habits changed a kingdom.
Our habits can be positive or negative. “What starts as a small win or minor setback accumulates into something much more”. Spiritual habits lead to outcomes and display God’s power in the real world. James Clear says in his book “good habits make time our ally, while bad habits make time our enemy”. There will always be a reason not to – if you want to change, pick one thing daily and get bet every single day.
1. What situation are you facing in your life that may be improved by changing your system of habits? How will you begin?
2. What daily habit have you chosen to start this week?
3. What distractions do you need to starve so you can feed your discipline to sustain this habit?
4. How will you depend on Jesus to sustain you while you implement these changes?
Daniel 6:10 NIV - Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
Romans 8:26 NIV - In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
