Israel had left captivity in Egypt, but they still had a mindset of captivity. Moses gives these commands (from the focus verse) to them on behalf of God. God was preparing the Israelites for a 40-year journey in the wilderness to work on removing the captivity mindset from their hearts, but they didn’t know this.
Get it inside. What we believe affects our behavior. People become what we SEE, not what we say. When it comes to our lives, it starts with us as leaders at home, friend groups, our business, especially in our families. We need to invest in our soul care and self-care, being full of God’s spirit and be as healthy as we can personally. Be careful about seeing things in others but having a blind spot in yourself.
Values. Most people think about people’s behavior, not belief. Belief causes your behavior which is the fruit and you don’t get to the root (belief).
Consistency. You choose what you value, do it in small ways and it makes a big impact over time. Toby called parents to choose on the thing they can do consistently in their home.
Values + Beliefs + Consistency = Culture
There is scientific research that shows a direct connection between mental health, state of being, and level of gratitude. Gratitude is something that doesn’t come naturally for any of us. Let gratitude become our focus rather than what we haven’t been given by God.
Let’s recognize unique struggles that are going on for others around us, pray and empower those that God brings to mind.
1. What are your values / family values?
2. What is the greatest thing going on in your life? Where are you struggling the most?
3. How will you start these conversations with your family or close friend groups?
4. What are you grateful for?
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 MSG – 4 Attention, Israel! God, our God! God the one and only! 5 Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got!
6-9 Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.
