Message Summary: How could the people in the book of Acts have everything in common? How can we? There are so many things that put us in different categories, such as: race, gender, education, marital status, veteran, age, etc. How can we enter into a space together and have everything in common when so much of our life is different? What would that look like? Just like the first church, the one thing that brings us together is breaking bread, praising God, and worshiping Him.
Worship is a reminder of who God is and of who we are. King David danced in rags and praised with all his might. We benefit when we choose to worship. Where does my help come from? The Lord. It is a reminder that even in all this mess, God is worthy of it all. We choose to worship even when bitter, and it reminds of who we are.
Worship is a weapon against the darkness. It puts us on the defensive, protects us, guards us. We have the temptation to get angry and bitter and do things we don’t normally do. King David chose to celebrate before the Lord. God chose him, out of all the people, and because of that David celebrated. He was willing to humiliate himself in front of others, but he was held in honor because he was a child of God. Before anything else, we are a child a God. Our only response is to worship, just like David. We do not have anything God wants, just our heart.
Keep your eyes up, even when you think you aren’t going to make it. How can our response not be to worship? What is it like to sell out to someone who celebrates us? This is what the disciples did in Acts 2. They would celebrate and break bread and worship together, then go out and share the Lord. There is power when we sing together, praise together. It can be a reality for us today. Let’s gather in community and build relationships.
Our calling is to build relationships, add community, and worship God with everything we’ve got. He is doing something important in your life, so why not worship?
Acts 2:42-47 – “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
2 Samuel 6:12-16, 20-22 – Now King David was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets. As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart…When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!” David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”
